Sok Sophear is a young actor who is making a name for himself in Khmer entertainment.  With two successful works such as the hit tv series with popular actress Keo Sreyneang and the hit 2003 film with Dang Monica that broke the box office "Tum Tiev" , Sophear is only moving up.  After both works he gained numerous fans mostly from the female sector.  Today he has many girls admiring him for his charm and work.  There was also a rumor that his popularity on screen even attracted the "elite class" in Cambodia, yes even the rich girls are crazy over him.  A couple have even offered to buy him cars and more if he would be their boyfriend, but despite all of this he has sad "NO" to them.

Currently he has been working with "Huy San Film Production" shooting the movie "Preah Suthon Neang Keo Monoreah" with Cambodian American newcomer Sanita Jessica Huy due released 2004.  Also he will have more works lining up for him so wait and see more of him soon.

Interview

Guy co-host:  What role or character do you portray in the Film Tum Tiev?

Sophear: Neyn Tum

Guy co-host: For What Production?

Sophear: SSB Production ( made Koun Phor Geng Gong), directed by L’ Fai Samang and  produce and written by L’Mao Sarapheap and Miss Kong Socheat.

Chanleakeana: (smiles)   That’s why you have to shave your head and also your eyebrows currently.

Chanleakeana: How do you feel when they chose you to be the Dara Ake in the film Tum Tiev.

Sophear:  I was very excited, because I had only worked on small works such as karaoke videos and when they asked me to be a part in such a huge 35 mm film I was so excited.  I could not sleep the next day.

Chanleakeana: In the film the directors/producers asked for you to shave your head right?  How    did you feel about that?

Sophear: I was kinda of nervous and unwilling because I have never shaved my head before. At first I wanted to wear those headpieces that made you look bald.  But after speaking to the producers I decided to shave it off because it is a big budget film,  you can’t wear a headpiece like in an ordinary video/movie.  Also they told me to shave it so that there will be a more realistic appeal in the film.

Guy co-host:  You used to only act in videos.  But now you said you did a big film, how is it    different from each other?

Sophear: It is a big difference between making a big budget film than making a video.  The    difference is huge, the knowledge, skills, and efforts is so much more.  Also there are   more equipments that are used and more cars carrying all of these equipments to different locations.  It’s more work.

Guy co-host:  Before shooting a scene how long and how much work is involved in the preparation?

Sophear: Well the set up of a scene itself takes about 2-3 hours.  Also the acting itself takes a lot of preparation because you have to prepare yourself for certain emotions in the scenes.  It is a long process.

Chanleakeana: In your character Neyn Tum, what scene was the hardest part to do?

Sophear: To me I felt that the whole film was very difficult to do.  But if I had to chose a part    I felt that the hardest part was near the end of the film, when my character Neyn    Tum dies.
(ch3 shows moving clips at this time from the film in widescreen 35 mm format)     Great!!! (I saw the scenes and they look great, especially the ending)

Guy co-host& Chanleakeana:  The ending? Why?

Sophear: The scene was shot under the Po tree that Tum was supposedly believed to be killed    at in Kompong Cham Province, Tabong Kamom village.

Guy co-host & Chanleakeana:  Wow the actual place and setting, the crew went all the way to the real place to shoot the film.  How was it?

Guy co-host::  Was it difficult to get the emotion right for that scene?

Sophear: Yes it was hard, but the weather was nice to us.  It seemed perfect for the whole scene, the wind and everything was perfect.  There were thunders, wind, and it was getting dark at the right moments but luckily no rain.

Chanleakeana: The weather helped you guys alot then, so not only the people involved but also the spirit of Lok Ta Tum helped to make it successful.

Sophear: Yes

Guy co-host:  Before shooting the film did you seek help or knowledge from previous     actors/actresses that had more experience before you?

Sophear: Yes, I learned a lot of things from the directors, and many of our past Dara (stars). They all helped me throughout the filming.  Also many of our previous stars are in the film.

Chanleakeana: Do you believe that the film will be successful?

Sophear: I really think that it will be successful because everyone put in a lot of work and    effort from everything to the settings to acting.

Guy co-host:  I personally can not wait because I feel that this 35 mm film proves that Khmer Film Industry is expanding once again.

Guy co-host:  Okay, you said that almost all the scenes in the film was difficult to do, but the part  where Tum cries , how did you prepare your emotion for this part?

Sophear: This part took me a very long time to prepare, I had to think about how I wanted to    portray this scene through my emotions.  I had to step out for 5 minutes or more to think.

Sophear: I had to find all the feelings and sad emotions inside of me from my past life (smiles)    and from other events in my life that was sad in order to shoot the scenes.

Chanleakeana: Okay now let’s talk about the love scene.

“everyone smiles”

Guy co-host:  I remember that the love between Tum Tiev is very sweet.  I learned the story in school that after Tum went into Tiev’s room their love sparked, (smiles) I don’t  really know what that meant.“everyone smiles”

Chanleakeana: In the film there is a special scene where Tum goes into Tiev’s house.  In this love scene do you feel that it was easy to do or was it difficult to do a love scene?

Sophear: In a love scene, it’s never easy to do for me (smiles).  It is hard.

Guy co-host:   (laughs)  Okay how about outside of the film is it easier for you to fall in love in real life?

Sophear: It’s never easy, outside it looks easy but inside love is hard to understand.

Guy co-host:  Oh, so in the film it is hard, but next time you’ll promise that it will be easier outside. (smiles)

Chanleakeana: It’s hard both in the film and real life.

Guy co-host & leakeana: The ‘smot’ scene?

Sophear: Aw! the ‘smot’ scene, In the beginning Tum secretly loves Tiev, we share our eye contacts, look at each other.

Panine & leak: Your still a monk in this scene right?

Sophear: In this scene I had to ‘smot’(Buddhist chanting to tell a moral story), while looking at Tiev.

Guy co-host & leak: Can you ‘smot’ for us?

Sophear: Yes, I’ll do a little from the movie...chants....

Guy co-host:  Can you do a little more because Miss Chanleakeana seems to enjoy it. (smiles)

Chanleakeana: (smiles)  Because I have not heard it before and it looks interesting.

Guy co-host:  Okay, let’s talk about your real love life. (commercial break)

“break over”

Sok Sophear sings a few songs...

Chanleakeana: Wow that was beautiful, not ordinary.  A Film Star, what is next a singer maybe?

Sophear: Oh the second song is from the film Tum Tiev, the scene were he mocks her in front    of the king.

Guy co-host  Okay you are a Dara Ake on Film, now how about in real life?

Chanleakeana: It’s normal for a handsome guy... and also our Khmer ladies now are very pretty.

Guy co-host:  Do you have someone special in real life yet?

Sophear: Right now my heart is free.  Everyday I am like a tourist looking around (laughs).

Guy co-host:  How about while shooting the film in Kompong Cham?  Did any ladies captured your heart?

Sophear: I saw like 3-4 ladies that I was looking at (laughs).

Guy co-host:   Right now you are thinking, but when will you actually bring love into your life?

Sophear: I really don’t know what day or year?

Guy co-host  It’s 2003 don’t wait too long, hurry up and think about it.

Sophear: Yeah I have been thinking and it will probably be soon.

Chanleakeana: You have thoughts about it already, when?

Sophear: Umm, maybe 4-10 more years (laughs).

Chanleakeana: Very smooth.

Guy co-host Okay another question when you are mad at someone how do you handle the situation?

Sophear: I try to remain quiet and not talk, and I usually walk away.

Chanleakeana: Very smart, not speaking back is winning over the situation.

Chanleakeana: Now you are a real Film Star, not an ordinary video star like before.  As a Film star how do you have to portray yourself?

Sophear: I am the same mostly, but I try to change a little with the help of the director.  When you are acting you don’t see anything wrong but the viewers will see the errors and they will help you to overcome and improve on them.  And really you just work with   it.
Chanleakeana: When will the Film be shown in theaters?

Sophear: From what I have heard it will be soon, because it is already done filming.

“little more talking and then the show is over”
